A Season of Growth

It has been a year of renewal and recognition for PGCC Athletics. From long-awaited program comebacks to championship honors, the department entered a new chapter defined by growth, grit, and pride.

The first milestone came early in the year when PGCC officially transitioned to NJCAA Division II after more than a decade in Division III. This move increases competitive opportunities and expands access to regional honors. It also allows the College to award athletic scholarships that broaden opportunities for students on and off the field. These scholarships cover tuition, fees, books, and up to $250 in course-required supplies.

The new division standard made an immediate impact. Ten student-athletes earned All-Region 20 recognition: four in men's soccer, three in women's basketball, two in men's basketball, and one in baseball. Women's basketball head coach Devin May played a pivotal role, earning the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Region 20 Coach of the Year award, which recognized his leadership and impact on the program's success.

"I was honored to be recognized as the Region 20 Coach of the Year," May said. "I was surprised, because I rarely focus on personal accolades and am always focused on the success of the program. I owe it all to this ohana — my family — that includes our coaching staff and the players who have come through this program. During my tenure, they have helped me grow into a coach worthy of consideration for this award."

This momentum stretched beyond the basketball court. After a 15-year hiatus, women's soccer returned to the field, completing a full year of training and scrimmages with 22 participants and preparing for intercollegiate play.

Cheerleading also returned after a four-year pause, with a 26-member squad led by PGCC's Barbara McCreary and Danielle LaSure-Bryant, Ed.D.

A highlight of the year was Jo Ann Rogers Todaro's induction into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women's Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She served as athletics director at the College for more than 20 years and was recognized at the 2024 NJCAA National Championships in Wichita, Kansas. Rogers Todaro has represented PGCC nationally since 1997, shaping the future of community college athletics.

Together, these milestones reflect more than athletic achievement; they signal the dynamic progression of a program built on perseverance, teamwork, and community pride.
