This Employer Guide outlines the expectations for site supervisors approved to oversee internships offered to and accepted by Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) students. If you have already completed some of the steps, proceed to the next step in the sequence. Be sure to observe and honor the site supervisor's expectations listed as well.

Prince George's Community College uses the adapted National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) criteria below to evaluate proposed internship experiences.
Criteria For An Experience to Be Defined As An Internship
To ensure that an experience—whether it is a traditional internship, or one conducted remotely or virtually—is educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) believes that an internship should include:
- A learning experience with a real-world opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the employer's operations or replace the work that a regular employee routinely performs.
- Learned skills and knowledge that are transferable to other employment settings.
- A defined beginning and end mutually agreed upon and consistent with institutional sponsor guidelines and schedules.
- A position description with clear responsibilities and required/desired qualifications.
- Clearly defined learning objectives/goals that support the student’s academic program goals and institutional requirements.
- Direct supervision by a professional(s) with relevant expertise and educational or professional experience who provides productive feedback, guidance, and the resources and equipment necessary to complete the assignment successfully.
See Internship Meaning and Definition: A NACE Guide on NACE's website.
Expectations for Site Supervisors
- Meet the NACE Guidelines or credentialing agency requirements, and the College’s academic program requirements for interns to gain experience in their chosen field.
- Supervise interns and provide feedback to them regarding their performance, professionalism, and progress.
- Verify the student intern’s hours worked as requested.
- Accommodate the Faculty Sponsor’s site visit; a "visit” may be in-person, virtual, by email, or by telephone.
- Provide feedback to the Faculty Sponsor regarding the student intern’s performance, professionalism, and progress.
- Complete and submit the requested student intern mid-term and final evaluations.

The tables below identify the internship type (non-paid or paid) and the required clock hours to be worked for each credit allocation (one to three credits) per internship course.
