Academic, financial, and counseling support for students in need.
What is TRiO Student Support Services?
TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) is a comprehensive, federally funded program that offers academic coaching to students needing scholarly support to accomplish their educational and career goals at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). SSS provides assistance at every stage of undergraduate education, whether the student is deciding which courses to take in the first semester or wondering how to prepare for graduation and transfer to a four-year institution. We provide intensive academic, personal, and career counseling to help program participants reach their goals. If students are committed to achieving their educational goals, they will find great benefits in SSS.
Who is Eligible to Join TRiO Student Support Services?
Services are available to eligible U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are registered in at least nine credit hour classes at PGCC (non-developmental), demonstrate need for support of academic goals, which include: graduation and transferring to a four-year institution, and meeting at least one of the following criteria:
- Income Eligibility: A family’s taxable income does not exceed levels set by the federal government, which can be found here, if the student is receiving any public assistance, or if the student is receiving Social Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), or Vocational Rehabilitation funding.
- First-Generation College Student: This implies that the student’s custodial parent or guardian does not possess a four-year college degree, or if the student has ever been a ward of the state or homeless.
- Students with Disabilities: The student must have documentation on file and be registered with the PGCC’s Disability Support Services.
Entrance into the program is based upon meeting the outlined eligibility criteria, along with demonstrated academic need and potential for graduation with an Associate degree and transfer to a four-year institution in a period no greater than three years from entry into the program. Additionally, all decisions will be based upon available space.
Committed to Supporting All Students
While Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program serving eligible students, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
Services Offered by SSS
Tutoring
One-on-one tutoring is available virtually or in person for students each semester. The tutor works with the student in a manner suitable to meet individual needs for an entire semester. Supplemental instruction is also a free service. The tutor attends the class with the students, facilitates a question and answer session after each class, and provides, in a group setting, supplemental instruction to enhance the course lecture.
Academic Advising
Understand and meet the academic requirements of your declared major. Your advisor, who is committed to your success, provides assistance with course selection, scheduling, registration, and using the college catalog.
Financial Aid and Financial Literacy Advising
Apply and maintain eligibility for student financial aid and scholarship programs. Additionally, program staff will assist in developing skills to become more financially literate.
Counseling
Assistance in clarifying educational and career goals and meeting the demands of college life. You can also get help solving personal problems or discussing personal concerns that may affect academic progress.
