Program Information

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are vital in the comfort of countless commercial, residential, and industrial spaces. Becoming a skilled installation, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance technician with our thoughtfully crafted curriculum developed by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). Our HVAC/R program prepares students for entry-level opportunities to advance in this ever-growing industry.

Certification

HVC-340 CFC Preparation and Certification

This course is designed to review the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under section 608 of the Clear Air Act for those who service, maintain, repair, or dispose of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment according to 40 CFR Part 82, subpart F. Information for Type 1, 2, and 3 (Universal) certification will be provided and the chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) test administered following the review.

  • Required textbook: "EPA Certification Exam Prep Manual (9th ed.)" by the Esco Institute. Note: Students must read the entire textbook before the first class. 
  • Registration requirements must be completed at least two days before the class start date.

Core Skills Option 1

OCU-410 Core: Introductory Craft Skills*

Topics include introduction to basic safety, math, hand and power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging, materials handling, and employability and communication skills.

Core Skills Option 2

OCU-463 Core Construction Skills*

This course equips students with the foundational knowledge needed prior to training in a building trade of their choice, and working on a construction job site. Students will learn concepts of basic safety on construction sites, math for the trades, blueprint reading, use of hand and power tools, rigging, and material handling. They also learn the steps involved in pursuing a career in the building trades and how to communicate effectively in a construction setting. Successfully completing this course allows students to earn the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER) Core Craft skills credential and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certification.

HVAC/R Level 1

HVC-370 Level 1, Part 1

This course is part one of three of the NCCER curriculum for HVAC/R students.

In this course, students are introduced to the guiding principles of HVAC, trade mathematics, and basic electricity.

HVC-371 Level 1, Part 2

This course is part two of three of the NCCER curriculum for Level 1 HVAC.

Students are introduced to heating, cooling, and air distribution systems.

  • Prerequisite: HVC-370
  • Required textbook: "NCCER HVAC Level 1"
HVC-372 Level 1, Part 3

This course is part three of the NCCER curriculum for Level 1 HVAC.

Students are introduced to basic copper and plastic piping practices, soldering and brazing, and basic carbon steel practices.

  • Prerequisite: HVC-371
  • Required textbook: "NCCER HVAC Level 1"

HVAC/R Level 2

HVC-373 Level 2, Part 1

This course is part one of four of the NCCER curriculum for Level 2 HVAC.

Students are introduced to alternating current, compressors, refrigerants, and oils. The textbook is required for the first class.

HVC-374 Level 2, Part 2

This course is part two of four of the NCCER curriculum for Level 2 HVAC.

Students are introduced to metering devices, leak detection, evacuation, recovery, and charging. This course covers EPA Section 608 regulations.

  • Prerequisite: HVC-373
HVC-375 Level 2, Part 3

This course is part three of four of the NCCER curriculum level for Level 2 HVAC.

Students are introduced to heat pumps, basic maintenance, chimneys, vents, and flues.

  • Required textbook: "NCCER HVAC Level 2"
  • Prerequisite: HVC-374
HVC-376 Level 2, Part 4

This course is the final part of the NCCER curriculum for Level 2 HVAC.

Students are introduced to sheet metal duct systems, fiberglass and fabric duct systems, commercial airside systems, and an introduction to hydronic systems.

  • Prerequisite: HVC-375
