Benefits and Overview
Service learning is a teaching and learning method that integrates community engagement into the curriculum. Some benefits of this method include:
- Fulfilling real community needs.
- Developing volunteer skills and experience.
- Building connections between the College and the community.
- Expanding services to others.
- Making resources available that may not be otherwise funded.
Project Types
Examples of service-learning projects include:
- A graphic design course that creates posters for nonprofit events.
- An environmental science course that writes proposals to help a small business operate more sustainability.
- A technical writing source that conducts a usability study for a set of instructions or an organization's website.
- A communications course that offers a workplace seminar on interpersonal problem-solving.
- A math course that collects and analyzes trash and recycling data to identify litter hot spots, then presents the findings.
