Train as a welder and work across specialized industries.

Career Overview

Welders use intense heat to join different types of metal. Once you gain skills in welding processes, you can take your career in many specialized directions, such as building water supply systems and bridges, repairing jets, and underwater welding. Welding involves high temperatures, loud machinery, and physical demands that require strict attention to safety. Many welders find job satisfaction in creating something tangible with their hands, and the work offers career security across multiple industries.

PGCC offers Continuing Education courses in basic and advanced arc welding. These courses are for students learning the basic principles of welding or seeking to refine existing skills and prepare for the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 Structural Steel Welder Performance Qualification Test.

WLD-300 Basic Arc Welding

Cost: $1,190

This course is designed to provide the student with introductory knowledge and skills in welding. Topics to be covered include an occupational orientation to welding; safety and health of welders; drawing and welding symbol interpretation; shielded metal arc welding; thermal cutting process; welding prep procedures; and flat, vertical, and overhead techniques.

WLD-301 Advanced Arc Welding

Cost: $1,190

This course provides students with advanced knowledge and skills in welding. Topics include welding safety; shielded metal arc welding (SMAW); gas metal arc welding (GMAW); plasma arc cutting (PAC); air carbon arc cutting and gouging (CAC-A); and welding and cutting processes. Welds will be performed in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. Additional topics are base metal, shielded metal arc welding electrodes, joint fit-up and alignment, groove welds with backing, and open V-groove welds.

WLD-304 Welder Testing Course

Cost: $350

This testing course administers the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 Structural Steel Welder Performance Qualification Test. Testing will be administered by an AWS-certified welding supervisor in the vertical and overhead groove positions on .375" or 1" plates using E7018 or E71T-1. Successful completion of both tests (Vertical and Overhead) will qualify a welder to weld with the applicable qualified electrodes in all positions in accordance with the applicable clauses and tables of AWS D1.1. Successful completion of Vertical testing will qualify welders for Vertical, Horizontal, and Flat positions. Successful completion of Overhead testing will qualify welders for Overhead and Flat positions. This is a one-day test.

Note: All courses are subject to a $25 registration fee in addition to the listed course cost.
